HYPAR STRUCTURES

Hypar is the word used to describe a piece of fabric held under tension. The Hypar Structure, therefore, is the mechanism by which that fabric is kept under tension, for example, two posts and some rope. The Hypar is simplicity itself, the most basic form of sunshade available. A simple tarpaulin tied at all four corners and lashed to four trees would constitute a Hypar. However, the critical aspect of the construction of a Hypar Structure is to ensure that there is adequate run-off for rain water, and that no pooling is allowed to occur. This can be achieved as in the example above by using a simple post at each end secured to the ground by way of ropes and ground-anchors, and then tying the two opposing corners down either side to create a tensioned ridge. This method can provide a very simple, lightweight shade that can be erected virtually anywhere in just a couple of minutes. At the opposite end of the scale are our permanently fixed heavy duty PVC fabric sails, another form of Hypar, but this time requiring a more permanent and structurally solid anchor point for the fabric corners. It is possible for us to attach our sails to either timber or steel posts concreted into the ground, but because of the stainless-steel bottle-screw tension system we utilise on the corners, with much larger sails we generally prefer to attach to a Hilti-eye fixed into a solid brick or concrete wall. We will create adequate slope over the sail area, however we believe that anchor point strength is of the optimum importance with our Hypar Sails.

HYPAR STRUCTURES 1

Here we see an example of our heavy duty PVC Shade Sails, finished as triangles with a stainless steel tension fastener attached securely at each corner and anchored via a chain to the walls of this nightclub courtyard. These sails look absolutely stunning at night when illuminated from underneath by spotlights.

HYPAR STRUCTURES 2

As our Shade Sails are permanently fixed structures, they need to have exceptionally strong anchor points. A structural wall is perfect, but posts of adequate stability can also be erected for this purpose. Providing the correct fabric is chosen, the sun plays an important part in lighting the sail from above
