It is not really possible to create a total blackout situation with the use of Venetian Blinds. Because of the small spaces between the overlapping slats, they will always let a small degree of light to enter the room. If total blackout is required, then one should look to fully cassetted roller blinds. However, we can create adequate room darkening for overhead projector and presentation purposes in a boardroom environment or school laborotary, or even University lecture hall, by taking one of our standard 50mm Venetian Blinds, and making a few very basic modifications. Firstly, by using matt black as the slat colour, we virtually eliminate all obtrusive light reflection. Secondly, with the introduction of wide black plastic tapes instead of ladder braids, we can conceal any light penetration through the punch holes created to accomodate the lift cords. Next, we use a very simple black PVCu side channel which easily accomodates the tilting motion of the slats, whilst adequately masking light penetration around the sides of the blind. And lastly, we add a pelmet to the headbox that covers the usual gap between this mechanism and the top slat. These simple adaptations turn a very ordinary Venetian Blind into a cost-effective, manually operated audio-visual room darkening system, without being overly complicated.
